The last time we took the boat out the weather was gorgeous and we had a great time. Lots of swimming and relaxing.
Not this time.
The boys (Todd and Jeff) wanted to go out early since we can only get oysters when it’s low tide. The big kids (Jack, Emma, Ava), myself, Todd, Jeff and our neighbor Jay bundled up and headed out in the cold. It was sunny and gorgeous but a bit windy and chilly.
It took a while to find the right spot to gather oysters but once they got going they quickly filled three big buckets. The kids and I hung out in the boat and took pics. We were not about to get our feet stuck in the ‘fluffy mud.”
While the boat was anchored in the fluff mud the tide continued to get lower. So- when it was time to head back in we were stuck!!! Unbelievable. We could not get the boat around the small oyster island. Finally two of the guys jumped in the water and started pushing the boat. I am glad that wasn’t me.
Just as we were getting ‘unstuck’ a redneck dressed in camouflage Department of Natural Resources police type guy (he was carrying a gun) whipped his boat up to us and proceeded to tell us that oystering was shut down for two weeks.
Little did we know that it was temporarily ILLEGAL to gather oysters. I guess the coast has gotten too much rain and that makes oysters susceptible to ecoli. Nice.
The redneck was nice and only gave us a warning but we could have been made to pay hundreds of dollars in fines.
Crazy!
Enjoy the pics.
Until next time…
