Last fall we signed Jack up for Soccer Starters at one of the local YMCA's. They can start at three and Jack turned three right after the fall season began, so he was the youngest. It was a disaster, not only did he not pay attention, the coaches expected WAAYYY too much from these little munchkins. So, needless to say it was a total waste of our Saturday mornings and we quit going.
Fast forward to this spring and I signed him up again for Mon/Wed afternoons for this month, just 45 minutes. The age group is 3-5 so Jack falls nearer to the middle this time (age-wise, not size-wise)! We've been three or four times now and it's a cross between a rat race and an Easter Egg hunt. I swear, they just kick that purple ball around with no end in sight. The funniest thing is the coaches really think they're teaching them the "fundamentals."
Fundamentals my you-know-what.
Seriously, please tell me these high school volunteer coaches, faces still fresh with teenage angst and acne, don't really think three, four and five year olds can follow directions with four steps in them.
Seriously, please tell me that these same coaches don't think that preschoolers can wait their turn for 5-6 minutes (yes, I just said WAIT THEIR TURN) to play some silly game that they didn't even show them how to play.
Seriously, these knuckleheads can't expect three year olds to shoot w/ their laces and kick with the insides of their foot and never use their toes.... come on.
But- that's just my perspective. Jack LOVES kicking the ball around and is actually pretty good at dribbling. He needs to get some more aggression behind his kicks, but the possibility of that happening is slim to none. He's more worried about his water breaks (which they were given NONE today) than beating his opponent.
I guess we'll wait another year for tee-ball, you think???
Until next time...
