So I Don't Forget

For as long as I can remember Riley and I have read books right before she falls asleep. We read some of the same books over and over and over again and for the last 6 months or so she's been 'reading' me a book and I'll read one to her.

Lately- some of these books have included:
Fancy Nancy
Pinkalicious
Purplelicious
How Does a Dinosaur Eat His Food?
Cinderella
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Fairy Numbers
Betsy B Giraffe

to name a few.

She's added another 'to do' on her list of bedtime routines the last couple of months: back scratching. Not just any back scratching mind you, but actually drawing of various objects on her back and stomach.

The last 20 minutes or so of Ri's awake time goes like this:

Riley 'reads' to me.
She 'writes' her reading ticket homework (or I help her if it's going painfully slow).
I read to Riley.
We turn lights off.
Ri flips on her belly and asks for me to draw a flower on her back.
Ri flips on her back and asks for me to draw a flower on her belly.
(Flower requests change nightly from daisy to tulip to daylilly to rose to carnation to peony to sunflower.)
(Sometimes she requests for me to draw a peace sign or diamond or star or some other random shape.)
And then it's 'back scratch' time and we chat.
Whew.

It's easy for my mind to drift during these nighttime routines to other things I need to do once she's asleep and I'm done scratching and reading and whatever else she may desire. But I must remember one day she probably won't want to see my face enter her bedroom so I will happily scratch her back for the time being.

Until next time...
