Our house in the mountains was called About Time- not sure where the owners came up with that name, but it was seriously about time Todd and I got our slack behinds up to the mountains. This beach bum had never been, but it was well worth the wait. We had a great time.
We headed out mid-morning on Friday and the drive was super easy. It only took us 2 hours to get to Boone, the closest town to where we were staying. We met up with Jeff and Tracy and the girls and decided to head downtown to find a neat local place for lunch. Let me tell you, the traffic was horrendous. It took us about 45 minutes to go about 2 miles and find a place to park. The lunch was great and it was worth the traffic.
Friday afternoon our friends Shannon and Scott and their daughter Maddie made it and the kids frolicked around in the back yard, which happened to be at the base of a mountain and on a cute little par three golf course. We got take- out Friday night and played cards while the kids played. A great evening to say the least.
Saturday was our big day. We headed out early to Grandfather Mountain, one of NC's biggest 'attractions,' if you will. We drove through numerous switchbacks up the steep mountain and got out to walk the mile high bridge. Didn't happen- it was probably about 30 degrees, with the wind chill in the teens and the winds were 70 miles per hour- crazy!! We let the boys do the bridge and then headed back down the mountain where we enjoyed much warmer weather and saw some amazing animals. We enjoyed some yummy cider and pumpkin fudge before leaving the mountain.
We headed into Blowing Rock for lunch. What a great town. If we had more time I would have liked to do a little shopping, but our lunch was hideously long so we just hit the park and then drove along the Blue Ridge Parkway before heading back to the house. Scott cooked us a delicious dinner and we celebrated Ava's birthday to cap off our great weekend.
I can't wait to go back and see more- it was beautiful and more than I expected scenery wise.
Emma being silly on our back porch.
Ava's turn.
Of course Jack had to get in on the action.
Miss Priss is missing!!
We couldn't get a good pic w/ Jack the whole weekend b/c of his silliness!
The back of our house.
The kids looking out over the creek in our backyard. (See how little Jack is!!)
OK- he's really not that short- he's standing lower on the hill- thank goodness.
A view from the top of Grandfather Mountain.
We were able to feed the bears- it was crazy. They were so close- of course they were gated, but it was cool b/c they stood there with their mouths wide open and we threw food to them and they would catch it!! Fun.
Here's Mildred.
A cougar.
All the kiddos - after a long morning.
Another family photo op- say cheese.
Until next time...
