A couple of months ago I saw that the circus was coming to town. Todd said he wouldn't mind going so we bought some tickets and kept pumping it up to Jack the week before hand. If my memory serves me correctly, I remember the circus having loads of animals and even being a little afraid that the lions and tigers would harm the person in the cage with them. Of course I also remember the trapeze and the tightrope walkers, but the animals were "it." It was a huge deal to go to the circus and I have fond memories of it.
This past Saturday was Jack's first trip to see the Ringling Brothers Circus. My mom came up to watch Riley, thank goodness, she would have been a nightmare there. We stopped at the ATM, got some cash, and headed downtown. The circus started at 11:00, but you could see the clowns, etc. before hand, so we made plans to arrive a little early. Our first clue should have been when Jack fell asleep on the way downtown. He NEVER falls asleep in the car anymore, unless we're on a trip, so that should have clued us in to what was to come.
Let me start by saying we paid around $100.00 for these tickets and they weren't even floor seats. Each ticket was $22.00 and then they add fees on. Add $6.00 for parking and we're over $100.00 now. Mind you, we don't mind spending the money to take Jack to do something fun, but it better be worth it, if you know what I mean.
Add $10.00 for some silly plastic motorcycle and $10.00 for one soda, a hot dog and M and M's and then another $6.00 for popcorn and we have approached $130.00. A nice dinner out right?
Well, we walked around before hand. It was not fun. Jack did get some silly plastic little clown nose thing though. The lines for the kiddie trapeze were atrocious and the doggie act was just finishing, so we went to our seats. I kept a positive attitude and said nothing. I should have noticed this was the "B" level circus when I realized there was only ONE ring. You know, the Three Ring Circus deal? Nope, we got one ring.
Honestly, (and we left about 30 minutes early) the ONLY animals we saw were horses and dogs (two dogs that caught frisbee's). I was utterly disappointed. They did have the high wire guys (and lady), which were pretty good, but even the flying trapeze act was short. It seems they spent more time "clowning" around on the floor than entertaining us in the rings.
The funniest thing about it was my friend called us that afternoon to tell us she saw us there and said the same thing. I guess Ringling Brothers has two circus's, the "Red" and "Blue" circus. So if you take your kids to the circus, make sure it's the right one, I sure will.
Until next time...
