Loggerheads

Last night we had the opportunity to witness something really, really cool.

We watched two baby Loggerhead turtles head into the ocean for the very first time.

This is super cool because Loggerhead turtles are on the protected list, one step away from the endangered list.

Here in DeBordieu there are people who walk the beach literally every day at the crack of dawn from May to October to find new Loggerhead nests. When they find new nests (which they've found about 60 so far this year) they mark them with orange mesh nets and stake them.

From what I understand it takes about 50 days for the eggs to hatch.

These same 'walkers' return to the nests at about Day 53 to make sure all the turtles have hatched.

So that's what we watched.

This particular nest had 156 eggs and two of the turtles had not made it to the ocean on their own.

It was really super cool!!

The kids were in awe.

There were a TON of people watching the turtles.

And- the turtles were about the cutest little things she ever did see.
