It's only human nature to notice what other kids your child's age are doing and compare them to your own. Wether or not we verbalize these comparisons we all do it. Sports, academics, speech, height, weight, social skills. Everything. We all want our kids to 'turn out ok' or better than ok, for that matter.
Sooo- I began to notice months ago that some of Jack's friends were able to pump themselves on the swing. Jack was soooo far from being able to pump himself it was quite frustrating. I tried over and over with him to teach him how to do it and it never happened.
Well- last week we brought Jack's friend from school, Carson, home with us. Carson is the cutest kid around and a quite a little daredevil. Our Jack is not a daredevil at all ( I wish he had some in him) so it was interesting to see Carson zip around on Jack's scooter and bike. I was secretly hoping that Jack was taking mental notes on Carson's abilities (he kept saying "Carson- you're really good on the scooter.")
So - back to the swings. Carson jumps on the swings and goes to town. I was nervous he was going to flip around the whole swing set. Jack was doing his usual tummy swing (what he's always done since he can't pump) and I told him to get up on that swing and pump himself.
Guess what? He did.
Jack can officially pump himself on the swings. Praise the Lord. It's about time.
So- I thank Carson b/c Jack was paying attention to what Carson was doing and wanted to be like him. Jack's going home w/ Carson soon so we'll see what new tricks he comes home with!!
Now-Jack- all you need to do is learn to tie your shoes and ride a bike w/o training wheels and you'll be all set.
Until next time...
