So here's the scoop on breakfast Saturday a.m. in NYC.
I have to preface this story by telling you that Todd loves - really loves - a diner made egg/bacon/cheese sandwich on a hard roll. His biggest complaint about living down south is the lack of a real 'diner.' You can get kaiser rolls down here but to him it's not the same. Anyway- he was pumped to have a good old egg/bacon/cheese sangie on a hard roll on our trip north.
Todd asked the concierge for a place to get this BEC hard roll sandwich. They sent us to this place down the street called Ben Ash.
The name alone should have told us to run in the opposite direction.
We walked in and there may have been one or two tables occupied in this restaurant- another sign. Most diners are hopping at 7:30 in the a.m. But this wasn't a diner- it was a restaurant.
We sat and opened menus.
HOLY SH*&!
Croissant: $3.95
Croissant toasted w/ cheese: $12.95
I kid you not. Add a slice of cheese and throw it in the toaster and bingo bango you can add $9.00. Only in NY.
We questioned the waiter about this and his response: "Well- the prices in midtown have really gone up."
Uhh- ya think? Must be feeding those cows some good food.
On w/ breakfast.
Great- Todd goes up front and asks if they have hard rolls. They have kaiser rolls. Oh well- we decide to stick it out.
Fast forward to ordering:
For Jack- one egg- medium- crispy bacon- toast. His usual.
Before we could finish saying 'crispy' the waiter says the cook won't make anything off the menu, which by the way has three eggs for $9.95.
They have no kids menu so we are forced to order Jack THREE eggs....
Poppy to the rescue. He says he'll share w/ Jack. Ok.
Todd goes to order: Bacon...egg....... on a ..... - you know the drill by now.
Our waiter: "Well- the cook won't make anything off the menu."
That's it. We're outta there.
We ask how much we owe for the two sips of each drink we have taken and the waiter actually went and got us a ticket.
Since he actually expected us to pay we asked for to go cups.
Unbelievable.
We went next door and ordered awesome breakfast sandwiches on HARD ROLLS for 1/3 of the price of that damn croissant w/ cheese.
Moral of story- if you go to NYC do NOT go to Ben Ash for breakfast.
Until next time...
