This week was all set to be Jack's first full week at school since mid- December (his full week consists of Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings). We had the holidays in December and beginning of January and then he was sick and then there was Martin Luther King Day. The 3rd week of January they had conferences, so we missed a day. Fast forward to this week and momma was looking forward to some time with just one child.
Not so fast.
Yesterday Jack decided he'd wake up with a slight cough and runny nose. In hind sight, Todd said he could have predicted what happened last night. He had another croup episode. This one wasn't bad, but we were prepared. A few weeks ago Jack's pediatrician, Dr. Reynolds, gave him a nebulizer (a personal vaporizor, if you will, that has a mask) and we fill it with a vial of Albuterol (a steroid) that opens up his lungs and makes his breathing easier. So, after hearing him hack away like a seal and wheezing I grab Todd and rush downstairs to get his meds and nebulizer. He hates it b/c it makes "too much noise." But he knows he doesn't have a choice. I turned on an episode of Diego (thank God for DVR) and that calmed him a bit. The breathing treatment worked, but I was still nervous about his cough.
Soooo... I slept on the floor (well, Jack's kiddy air mattress) next to Jack's bed to make sure he was ok. It took him a while to get back to sleep b/c the croup leads to a yucky, but temporary, cough. He was much better this morning, but still had a runny nose and cough so I kept him home!! We went back to the Dr. and he prescribed a mild preventative steroid that we're supposed to give him twice a day, but we're going to wait and see how he does. Todd's afraid of over-medicating our kids, and I agree that we should take a wait-and-see approach.
So we'll keep ya posted- Riley is fine, thank goodness. Just trucking along and eating like a champ. She's been zonked since 5:50 b/c she only slept for 1 1/2 hours TOTAL today. Yes, she's a nut, but we love her.
Until next time...
